2017 Mitsubishi RVR Black editionThe very capable Mitsubishi RVR is a mid-size SUV that has done rather well in Canada with good sales since its 2010 introduction. For 2017, the RVR has a few minor changes with an attractive new front fascia, new headlights and foglights there are seven trim levels in the RVR range from well-equipped base two-wheel drive model to a fully loaded All-Wheel Drive model. We tested the just for Canada, new limited edition “Black Edition” model, built on the SE trim that offers such features as well…black (Labrador) paint! Black 18-inch GT wheels, a black grille, a black skid plate, black wheel arches, roof rails as well as other blackout pieces and special badging on the exterior. The Black Edition interior in the RVR offers red contrast detailing with red stitching and aluminum pedals. The audio in the Black Edition is also upgraded to a six-speaker audio set up instead of the standard four-speaker system. A 6.5-inch touchscreen display, with smartphone connectivity and access for Apple CarPlay and Android auto functionality is also included. It is worth noting, Mitsubishi’s excellent Lancer sedan also come in a Black Edition.

The RVR Black Edition comes with the top tier 2.4-litre L4 engine, which produces 168 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of Torque. Transmission is via a Sportronic CVT unit linked to an all-wheel control (AWC) powertrain system instead of the base five-speed manual transmission with entry-level front-wheel-drive. The AWC system is impressive with a simple button in the centre console that allows for driver selectable standard front-wheel drive, automatic 4WD, or 4WD lock modes depending on terrain surface and condition. An electronic manual mode is available, teamed with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Showcasing a premium, value minded list of features, the RVR is packed with cutting edge entertainment, driver’s aid technologies and advanced safety features. Features such as Active Stability Control (ASC), Hill Start Assist (HSA), and Anti-lock brakes (ABS) are just a few of RVRs premium features. Order a top tier model and the equipment list includes automatic climate control, heated seats, all the usual power assists; tilt-telescope wheel with audio and cruise controls, fast key entry, a panoramic sunroof and roof rails. Cabin-wise the RVR has a spacious front interior and enough room in all quarters. However, the rear cabin could be a tight squeeze for three adults. The rear seats split in a 60/40 configuration and increase cargo from 614-litre (21.7 cubic-foot) dimensions to a maximum of 1,402 litres (49.5 cubic feet) when the rear seats are down.

On the road, the RVR’s fully independent front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspension with more substantial anti-roll bars provide a good stability and a high level of control and ease. Despite the small wheelbase, the ride is comfortable and relaxed. The RVR’s DOHC, MIVEC engine is also a stellar performer with good acceleration and a smooth linear power delivery. The Sportronic INVECS-III transmission offers six sequential “gears” that operate and feel more like a conventional automatic, and teamed with the rally-derived AWC all-wheel drive offer excellent levels of grip and power in all road conditions. The system can automatically select the best drive mode for snow, mud and low traction terrain and situations. It also offers a handy 8.5 inches of ground clearance. Note the RVR is not a super hard-core off-roader, but will handle rough trails and light-medium snow very well. With a light 1,490-kilo (3,285-lb) curb weight the fuel economy is good with an estimated 9.7 CTY / 7.8 HWY / 8.8 combined10.5 L/100km city.

All Mitsubishi vehicle’s come with the best comprehensive warranties available. 10-year/160,000 km Powertrain Limited Warranty, 10-year/160,000 km New Vehicle Limited Warranty and a 10-year/Unlimited km Roadside Assistance. So, you can’t beat better than that. I have to say, the RVR is one of my favorite SUV’s with its handsome looks, unpretentious nature and solid performance, The Black Edition is also very alterative with its special features, if you are looking for something unique. Highly recommended.
