What not to love about the Honda civic? – The veritable Swiss army knife of the compact sedan. It comes in coupe, hatchback and sedan models in a good selection of permutations from the inexpensive well -equipped LX model rising up to the even better equipped Sport, EX-and the lavish top scale Touring models. Want performance? Look this way, as the civic Si coupe and the hooligan Civic Type R offer performance, racy look and excitement. The Civic has been in the top selling list for decades and it is not hard to see why, as all Civics offer value for money, reliability and durability. The current version of the Civic has a stylish, unique look to it that is still finding favour with Canadian buyers. Engine choices are limited to a2.0 liter 16 valve four- cylinder engine with 158 horsepower as found in the LX and EX models or the 1,5 liter turbocharged engine as found in the top Touring model. The Honda Civic Sport Touring’s 1.5-litre engine produces a modest 174 horsepower, and is also hooked up to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with front wheel
For 2021 there are no significant changes for the Civic sedan, while there is an updated front and rear styling treatment for hatchback and Civic Si. The base LX comes with a lot of equipment for the money, but the Sport Touring model as tested may be worth the upgrade for those looking for extra features, such as: the rear spoiler, the uber cool twin center exhausts and the flashy alloy wheels.
Interior –wise, there is a neat, simple cabin that’s filled with high quality materials. Equipment levels are high with a plethora of convenience and full gadgets. The Sport Touring adds such things as: steering wheel mounted controls and paddle shifters, leather seating surfaces, raised contrast stitching, soft touch plastics, black detailed trim panels and a 452-watt premium audio system with 10 speakers including a subwoofer. The Touring also features a small charge pad for your phone just below the centre console ahead of the gear selector. Bluetooth streaming audio, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are all compatible. The rear cabin is roomy with decent enough seat comfort and good rear seat leg room. Safety is excellent- with features such as Collision Mitigation Braking System that will apply brakes to stop you from having a crash and a Forward Collision Warning that flashes BRAKE! Across the dash if it thinks you’re about to be a have a forward impact. A Lane Departure Warning System will also alert you when you’re drifting into a neighbouring lane. One the best Honda safety features is the right hand blind spot camera image which appears on the centre screen when you indicate a lane change or are watching out for cyclists in the city. Adaptive cruise control is also included. Not to worry of you don’t like all these so –called nanny aids, there is switch to disable some of the functions.
On the road, the Civic Touring 1.5L Four cylinder engine adds an extra dimension of sport with good acceleration, although you do have to keep your pedal to the metal as the turbo waits to kick in. The result is eager, acceleration and lots of usable torque. It is a pleasant, carefree car to drive with nimble handling and quick reflexes thanks to solid engineering. The Sport-tuned steering is precise, responsive with a good lock and return to center action. Overall, there is excellent fuel economy and performance from the turbocharged engine. (Regular) 7.8 / 6.2 / 7.1L/100 km city/highway/combined. Nothing much to complain about. The interior could sue some more contrasting trim. It is a bit dark in there with all black leather, and black plastic panel trims. How about some added metal trim, contrasting seat trim color, or even the odd bit of carbon fibre, even if its faux here and
Overall there are great features, quality and value for the price. It’s solid, quality built and just plain fun to drive. The 2020 Civic Si has the better handling and reflexes, while the Civic Type –R up the ante to high performance sports car status. But nothing to take away from the Sport Touring in its versatile hatchback form. The Sport Touring is an excellent value and is highly recommended.
