The Queensborough Bridge is receiving a major upgrade in 2026, bringing enhanced safety, reliability and longevity to the structure.
The Ministry of Transportation and Transit has announced a contract award for the major bridge renewal, which will include resurfacing, repairs, replacement of deck joints and drainage upgrades.
The $20.8-million contract has been awarded to Kingston Construction Ltd., with work expected to start in spring 2026 and complete in fall 2027.
A bridge with history
The Queensborough Bridge was originally constructed in 1960 and carries four lanes of Highway 91A traffic, two lanes northbound and southbound, across the north arm of Fraser River, connecting New Westminster to Lulu Island. The bridge has undergone several major modifications over its lifespan, including seismic and safety upgrades with median-barrier installation and barrier walls to separate pedestrians from motorists.
The Queensborough Bridge carries nearly 88,000 vehicles per day, and the renewal of the bridge has been identified as a priority by the ministry’s asset management team.
Traffic impacts
Over the course of the project, the rehab work is expected to require nightly lane closures so the contractor can work safely.
- Nighttime lane closures will be in place in both directions between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. (8 a.m. on weekends).
- For the duration of the closures, one lane will remain open to traffic in each direction to minimize the traffic impact at night. Motorists will see some congestion at the start of the evening shift until traffic volumes subside.
