Born to a Bengali Ganguly family on August 26, 1929, as ABHAS KUMAR GANGULY, he started singing from a very young age and always considered KUNDAN LAL SAIGAL as his guru. Though he never had any formal training, he used to sing the songs of K. L. Saigal and of his elder brother ASHOK KUMAR at family functions and it was natural for him to follow his elder brother to Bombay (Mumbai) as he was a well-known actor and producer.
