CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa set up a special medical team to take care of a patient who is in coma for two months and announced Rs 5 lakh assistance to the family.

The move comes after C Subramanian, a resident of Kanyakumari, last week appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to allow mercy killing of his wife S Seethalakshmi as she has been in coma after a thyroid surgery in a government hospital. He made the extreme appeal because doctors did not offer him any hope of her revival.

Subramanian, who submitted a petition to top government officials at the state secretariat, had also told reporters that he had borrowed 3 lakh to treat his wife and urged the government to bear the cost of further treatment if it wasn’t willing to allow euthanasia.
