Pursuing a post-secondary education can be a big-time commitment, and a big investment. But Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is working to change that. The university is home to Canada’s first Zed Cred program—a growing suite of available courses that have no textbook costs.
Currently, the university offers over 200 courses that have zero textbook costs with ongoing efforts to expand the options available. Through the use of open educational resources and available library materials, students at KPU can complete a certificate in arts, an adult graduation diploma (equivalent to the BC grade 12 graduation diploma), and academic and career preparation courses, without having to pay for textbooks.
“Textbooks can account for up to 40 per cent of a post-secondary student’s educational costs.” said KPU psychology instructor, Rajiv Jhangiani in a Globe and Mail article from earlier this year. Jhangiani also notes that the cost of textbook has gone up over 1,000 per cent, more than triple the rate of inflation, since 1977. BCcampus, an organization supporting post-secondary institutions in BC and an advocate of open education, states students across the province have saved upwards of $9,000,000 since 2012 through the use of open textbooks and educational resources.
As the provincial leader in the adoption of open textbooks and open educational resources, KPU continues to save students hundreds of dollars each semester, and as more zero textbook cost courses are offered, that number is expected to steadily grow.
