Edmonton:  A St. Paul man who illegally sold 55 restricted firearms has been handed a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence following a 2012 Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) investigation. Trevor Melnyk, 33 years old, was sentenced in Edmonton provincial court on March 5th following his guilty plea and admission to trafficking firearms.  ALERT’s Edmonton Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) investigated Melnyk after two handguns registered to him were recovered in a drug-related search warrant on September 2012. The serial numbers were filed off both firearms but lab analysis traced them back to Melnyk. Additional handguns were recovered in separate drug and gang investigations.Since being formed in 2006, ALERT teams have taken more than 600 firearms out of the hands of criminals and off the province’s streets.
