Jonathan Van Breevoort is feeling very lucky these days. The graduate of DIVERSEcity ITTI Program (Immigrant Trades Training Initiative), Jonathan Van Breevoort not only won the Gold Medal in the BC Skills competition for Refrigeration Mechanics, he also met his future wife at the competition in April 2014. Jonathan was born & raised in Sweden. After he completed his Grade 12 here in BC, he received funding from the ITTI Program at DIVERSEcity for HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) training to become a Refrigeration Mechanic.
He completed his Foundations course in December 2013 and is currently employed as an apprentice in the field. The BC Skills Competition for Refrigeration Mechanics took place on April 9th, 2014 at the Tradex in Abbotsford. This competition was based on completion, safety, and quality of work.
Jonathan attributes his success in the competition partly to assistance from JARTS, the school he attended for HVAC training. Additionally, he says that his new boss also provided a great deal of support and guidance in his quest to win the competition!
Jonathan met his future wife, who is also an Apprentice Refrigeration Mechanic from Kelowna, at the Skills Competition. For Jonathan, the future is looking very bright!
“The Immigrant Trades Training Initiative is a great program” says a beaming Jonathan. “Hats off to Peter (Sajgalik) and Johnson (Varghese) at DIVERSEcity!” Jonathan says that he will be taking his 2nd year of training in February this year, and he plans to work toward his Journeyman status.

About the Immigrant Trades
Training Initiative (ITTI) Program: The Immigrants Trade Training Initiative (ITTI) program is designed to help immigrants achieve employment in the trades’ professions in their chosen field.

Through ITTI, new immigrants are able to gain labour market information and be informed on Canadian certification processes as well as
Industry Training Authority (ITA) apprenticeship and Red Seal certification rules and procedures. The program focuses on preparing and educating immigrants on qualifications required to gain Canadian work experience. This may involve assessment of training and education needs, what financial supports are required, and defining previous work experience and level of language skills.
