Jim Flaherty resigned early this week

Ottawa: Early this week Jim Flaherty resigned from his position as Minister of Finance in order to return to the private sector. Stephen Harper issued a statement on Mar 18 regarding the resignation of Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance “It is with great reluctance that today I accepted the resignation from Cabinet of Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, so that he can eventually return to the private sector.” Joe Oliver has been sworn in as finance minister and Greg Rickford has replaced Oliver at natural resources. In a statement announcing his resignation, Flaherty said he is proud of the accomplishments of the governments he was part of. He also said that his health did not force him to take this decision. He stated,” As many of you know, I faced a health issue over this past year. I have received much support and good wishes from Canadians across the country and for that, I am thankful. I am happy to report that I am on the road to a full recovery and the decision to leave politics was not related in any way to my health. This decision was made because it is the right one for me and my family at this time.”
