Chennai: Kingpin of illegal luxury car import racket, Alex C Joseph, failed earn his freedom, when Madras high court rejected his bail application saying he had ‘bad antecedents’ and that he could flee the country on a fake passport, if let out on bail.
CBI, which had raided several houses including that of Udhayanidhi Stalin a few months ago to unravel the multi-crore racket, nabbed the absconding Alex from a star hotel in Delhi on February 3. He is in jail for the past 66 days. His earlier bail application was dismissed by the high court on March 14.
According to CBI, Alex imported scores of luxury cars using the names of cooks and workers employed abroad. He used to book the bill of entry in their names, and abused the transfer of residence scheme to cause loss of Rs 48.4 crore to the exchequer, the central agency said.
