Ottawa: NDP MPs for Surrey, Jasbir Sandhu (Surrey North) and Jinny Sims (Newton-North
Delta), presented petitions to the House of Commons today regarding proposal by the Fraser
Surrey Docks to increase coal. These petitions call for a comprehensive third-party health impact
assessment of the project. “The health and well-being of our communities should be a priority
in all political decisions. It is my privilege to ensure that this is taken into consideration by the
federal government,” says Sandhu. The petitions are the result of work done by local community
organizations concerned about the impacts that this project will have on the environment and
the health of those living along the proposed route. Says Sims, “In meetings with concerned
citizens, I have heard worries about air quality, coal dust and other potential environmental
impacts. I join them in this request for a third party assessment of the health impacts of this
project and look forward to the response of the Government to this request.”
