Chilliwack:  Chilliwack RCMP are investigating a mischief to a grave site at a cemetery located at 44200 block Chilliwack Mountain Road.

On April 20th family members attended the cemetery to discover that the grave site of a deceased family member had been partially dug up. The coffin of the deceased, who had been resting there for twenty years, had not been entered.  Several shovels were left at the scene.

It is believed that the deceased had been buried with family heirlooms including jewelry and that this may have been the target of the thieves. The coffin though had been cemented closed and had not been breached.

“This is a disturbing occurrence ”  advises Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen. “ We are taking this very seriously. The cemetery is located in a rural and remote area so we are asking the assistance of the general public in solving this.”

It is believed that the grave may have been dug up several days prior to the 20th of April. Anyone having knowledge of this is asked to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or, if you wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
