Richmond: The City of Richmond invites artists of all ages and abilities to put pencil to paper and create a design that could be featured on some of the City’s new manhole covers. Cover Stories: Manhole Cover Art Contest will engage the community to transform regular manhole covers into works of public art, showcasing the theme of Richmond’s cultural heritage.

“Over the years, Richmond has been shaped by many diverse historical, social, environmental and ecological events,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Our city’s rich culture and heritage is great inspiration for artwork that will not only transform the streets and sidewalks, but also establish a sense of place and pride for the community.”

The art work must reference Richmond’s cultural heritage. Artists are encouraged to think about all the pivotal moments in Richmond’s history that have shaped the City’s cultural and social identities. These may include important historical figures or a key historical event. Art work must be completed on an established template available at www.richmond.ca/coverstories. Submissions will be accepted from now until September 12, 2014.

The art contest is open to anyone who lives in the Metro Vancouver area. Participants do not have to be a professional artist to enter. All submissions will be reviewed by a five-person jury panel comprised of artists, community representatives and art professionals. They will select two designs that will be transferred into casts and made into manhole covers. The two selected artists will each be awarded $2,000. Approximately 200 manhole covers will be cast. When covers need to be replaced throughout the City, the new designs will be put in their place.

The community will have the opportunity to vote online for their favourite design in October 2014. A special honourable mention will be chosen from entries submitted by elementary school students. All winners and honourable mentions will be announced in November 2014. Installation of the two selected manhole cover designs will begin in July 2015.
