Ottawa: The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, released the following statement today regarding the costs to provinces of Justin Trudeau’s self-inflicted border crisis:

“Last week, the Parliamentary Budget Officer pegged the cost to all Canadian taxpayers of Justin Trudeau’s illegal border crosser crisis at a staggering $1.1 billion. It turns out that is only the beginning.

“His failure to fix this problem also has costly consequences for the provinces. Today, the province of Quebec confirmed it has cost its taxpayers $300 million to accommodate illegal border crossers since last year. This is in addition to the $200 million Ontario has repeatedly demanded from Trudeau to cover their costs.

“That brings the total price tag of Justin Trudeau’s illegal border crisis to $1.6 billion – and that number keeps climbing every day as more cross into Canada illegally from the United States every single day.

“Unless and until Justin Trudeau stops people from crossing illegally into Canada, the problem will not go away and the cost will keep going up.

“This is a failure of epic proportions – a social and financial debacle that is destroying Canada’s reputation as safe refuge for the world’s most vulnerable. Not only is it costing taxpayers dearly, it is causing long delays in the system for people fleeing violence and persecution abroad who choose to enter Canada legally.

“For years, Conservatives have been urging Justin Trudeau to fix this crisis. Just as he has steadfastly refused to take action, he has also refused to take responsibility.”
