Like Hollywood, Bollywood too has been toying with sequels and quite successfully for some time. Yash Chopra’s DHOOM, Arbaaz Khan’s DABANGG, Rakesh Roshan’s KRISSH & Firoz Nadiadwala’s HERA PHERI are some of the prominent films with bigger & better sequels and it seems all four will have at least another sequel. While Dhoom trilogy is India’s most successful series yet, others like DABANGG, KRISSH, HOUSEFULL & HERA PHERI have had great success at the box-office as well and many like Mahesh Bhatt’s AASHIQUI, THE HATE STORY, MURDER & RAAZ have been rewriting box-office history. Action & comedy go hand in hand and most of the sequels have been light comedy with emphasis in biggest ensemble of star actors and Anees Bazmi’s WELCOME series is one amongst them. WELCOME featured Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Feroze Khan (his last film ) & Malaika Arora Khan but the sequel has John Abraham & Shruti Haasan in lead roles and retained Anil Kapoor & Nana Patekar with the addition of Abhishek Bachchan, Naseeruddin Shah, Surveen Chawla, Shiney Ahuja, Paresh Rawal & Kadar Khan in prominent roles. Akshay was also replaced by John Abraham for HERA PHERI 3 and the sequels of MURDER & RAAZ also had different actors but Anees Bazmi’s WELCOME BACK, retaining the prominent actors, is relying upon the bigger & better stars to pull through and it seems that many are anxiously awaiting the results.
Akshay Kumar is notoriously popular in many films & their sequels and it’s to be seen if their success or failure will affect the future films. Meanwhile, the market is abuzz over the possible outcome of WELCOME BACK and many are hoping the film to be a success at the box-office. With Arbaaz Khan gearing towards DABANGG 3 and Vikram & Mukesh Bhatt preparing bolder scripts to make perfect break from films, the sequel business will grow over the years and there’s no doubt that upcoming films this season, will not only insipre but make money for the producers !!!
