Henry Hudson Elementary is now complete for Vancouver students, ensuring more kids have the spaces they need to grow and thrive.
“Every student in Vancouver deserves a safe and modern place to learn,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Infrastructure. “By replacing and expanding Henry Hudson Elementary, we’re investing in the heart of the community, creating spaces where generations of children can learn, families can connect, and neighbourhoods can thrive.”
Benefiting students today
- The new Henry Hudson Elementary, a seismic replacement and expansion, adds 390 seismically safer seats and 145 new seats for students.
- Two of the three storeys are dedicated to school use, including the first floor, which also features a new neighbourhood learning centre.
- The top floor of the school is home to a new child care centre.
- The school’s unique design integrates student breakout spaces and common areas for flexible learning.
- New recreation spaces include a larger gymnasium, a new school field and additional outdoor play spaces.
- Built to LEED Gold standards, the school is designed to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by up to 75% and increase energy efficiency.
- The main school building opened for students in fall 2024, and the expansion was completed in fall 2025.
“The expanded Henry Hudson Elementary with on-site child care spaces gives Vancouver families better access to the supports their children need in one convenient location,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Education and Child Care. “Co-locating child care on school grounds provides children the benefit of learning in environments that are safe, modern and built to support their success as they transition into kindergarten.”
Supporting Vancouver families
- The new neighbourhood learning centre at Henry Hudson Elementary includes before- and after-school care spaces and a separate preschool.
- To further support families in the neighbourhood, the City of Vancouver contributed nearly $10 million to the project to create 65 child care spaces for newborns to age five, and an additional 30 after-school care spaces, which are operated in partnership with the Vancouver School District.
- Additional multi-purpose spaces are also included to support community programs.
Supporting Vancouver students
Since 2017, the Province has committed more than $526 million to create 775 new seats and 7,410 seismically safer seats for Vancouver students.
- This includes new schools and classrooms in neighbourhoods throughout Vancouver, to help meet enrolment growth.
- These investments include almost $50 million for the new Henry Hudson Elementary school.
- Additional funding for Henry Hudson Elementary included $1 million from the Vancouver School Board and nearly $10 million from the City of Vancouver for the child care centre.
“This project brings us another step closer to ensuring every student in Vancouver attends a seismically safer school,” said Victoria Jung, chair, Vancouver School Board. “The new and expanded Henry Hudson Elementary school provides modern learning spaces and much-needed child care to support families in this growing neighbourhood. We thank the Province of B.C. and the City of Vancouver for their investment in the safety and success of VSB students.”
Creating more student spaces across B.C.
Since 2017, the Province has committed more than $6.6 billion to build schools:
- creating nearly 46,500 new student spaces throughout the province
- more than 39,000 seismically safer seats in B.C. schools
- including more than 22,000 new student spaces and more than 33,000 seismically safer seats for students throughout B.C. that are already complete.
As the province grows, government remains committed to working with school districts and municipalities to provide students with safe, modern places to learn.
Quotes:
Brenda Bailey, MLA for Vancouver South-Granville –
“This new and expanded school is a great addition to the Kitsilano neighbourhood. With child care, a neighbourhood learning centre and expanded recreation space, this school is truly a community hub that will benefit families and students now and for years to come.”
Ken Sim, mayor of Vancouver –
“The completion of the new Henry Hudson Elementary is another big step forward in how we’re supporting families across Vancouver. With child care now co-located right in the school, parents have easier access to the high-quality, licensed spaces they need, all in one place. This model has been working incredibly well at sites like Eric Hamber, and it shows what’s possible when different levels of government work together.”
