Premier David Eby has issued the following statement marking New Year’s Day:

“Tonight, people across British Columbia will reflect on the year we’ve been through and look forward to the one ahead.

“This has been a year like none other in our history. It began with the president of our largest trading partner and a longstanding ally threatening our economy and our sovereignty. Those attacks have had real consequences for people and communities.

“But British Columbians responded the way we always do. We came together to defend the country we love, to stand up for one another and to support the workers and communities caught in the crossfire.

“Throughout the year, our government’s focus has been clear: building a stronger, more resilient economy that is less dependent on the United States and that works better for people here at home.

“We are seeing encouraging signs all around us. New job-creating projects are reaching final investment decisions and thousands of good jobs are being created across the province. British Columbia will be the economic engine that powers a stronger and more independent Canadian economy – which is both a huge opportunity we must seize and a deep responsibility to the country to deliver on.

“We are also turning the corner on other big challenges. Rents are beginning to come down, thousands more people are now connected to a family doctor, and major infrastructure projects are coming online to support growing communities.

“Even as we make progress, we know many people are still struggling. Families are feeling stretched, especially at this time of year. That’s why the work ahead matters just as much as what we’ve accomplished so far.

“That work means training British Columbians for the skilled trades, so they are first in line for new jobs and higher paycheques. It means continuing to bring down the cost of daily essentials and creating the wealth necessary to improve the public services people depend on.

“There is nowhere else in the world I would rather be to face big challenges and a changing world than here in British Columbia. We have everything we need: skilled people, abundant resources and a shared commitment to look out for one another.

“As we say goodbye to the past year, let’s welcome the new one with confidence and with hope, knowing that together we can keep building a stronger, brighter future for British Columbia.”
