Premier David Eby has issued the following statement on Yalda:

“On the longest and darkest night of the year, people from Afghan, Azeri, Iranian, Kurdish, Tajik and Uzbek communities in British Columbia join others around the world in celebrating Yalda.

“It is a time for family and friends to gather. Poetry will be recited and stories told. Foods such as watermelon and pomegranate are shared, the red of both a symbol of the coming of a new dawn.

“Yalda is a time to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, as nights once again become shorter, signifying brighter days in future. It is a time to celebrate hope and optimism, while cherishing our loved ones.

“I wish all celebrating Yalda a wonderful evening of joy.

“Shab-e Yalda Mobarak!”
