Surrey, B.C. – At the July 14, 2025, Regular Council Meeting, Surrey Council approved a $2.3 M construction contract on intersection improvements including three new roundabouts to improve traffic flow and road safety in Surrey neighbourhoods.
“This Council is committed to investing not only in major road projects but also in local communities to keep traffic moving and make our streets safer,” says Mayor Brenda Locke. “I’m especially pleased that two of the new roundabouts are in Newton, sites chosen directly in response to what we heard from residents through the Focus Newton engagement. Listening to our community’s input, I’m proud to introduce these new roundabouts that will improve traffic flow, reduce crashes, and make our neighbourhoods more walkable.
The intersection improvements contract includes:
- A roundabout at 68 Avenue and 134 Street in Newton by Unwin Park
- A roundabout at 76 Avenue and 148 Street in Newton
- A roundabout at 54 Avenue and 188 Street in Cloverdale
- And a new southbound right turn lane at 64 Avenue and 148 Street intersection
“Roundabouts are a safe and efficient way to manage traffic,” says Rafael Villerreal, Director of Transportation. “Roundabouts reduce speeds, lower the risk of serious collisions, and keep vehicles moving better than stop signs or signals. We know they take some getting used to, but they’re used all over the world and proven to make our streets safer.”
The following are basic rules on how to use roundabouts:
- Must enter to the right (counterclockwise)
- Yield to traffic already in the circle
- Signal when entering and leaving the circle
- Watch for pedestrians and cyclists
