fiji electionsSuva: Voting in Fiji’s first general elections since the military coup in 2006 ended Wednesday and ballot counting has begun, a media report said.

Fijians voted in large numbers in the general elections held after 2006 military coup.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem said counting has begun and results would be announced late Wednesday evening, Fiji Times reported.

Ethnic Indians comprise 37 percent of Fiji’s population of nearly 870,000.

Most of them are descendants of indentured labourers who were brought in from India between 1879 and 1916 to work in the country’s sugarcane plantations.
