Nearly 78% of jobs in British Columbia will require some form of post-secondary education or training, according to the BC Labour Market Outlook. In addition, the report states that nearly half of all jobs in the province over the next decade will be filled by people entering the workforce for the first time. The need for post-secondary education, complemented by real-world skills, has never been clearer.
For almost four decades, Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) has been helping students develop the skills they need for the careers they want. As Canada’s only polytechnic university, KPU puts emphasis on hands-on learning in addition to traditional academics. The university incorporates experiential learning opportunities like group projects, presentation, guest speakers, work experience terms, practicums, co-operative education, student exchanges, field school, and more into a range of unique programs.
KPU currently offers 120 programs in arts, science and horticulture, business, health, design, trades and technology, and academic and career advancement, where students can complete a degree, diploma, certificate, citation, or apprenticeship training. The university has four campuses across Metro Vancouver—Surrey, Langley, Cloverdale, and Richmond—where over 20,000 students annually attend classes. Continuing to grow and evolve, KPU is opening a fifth campus, Civic Plaza, in downtown Surrey, in January 2019.
Classes, led by expert faculty with real-world experience in their field, have a maximum of 35 students at KPU allowing for more one-on-one interaction. The university works closely with industry partners and professional organizations to continue offering innovative and in-demand programs and courses like a new mechatronics diploma, launching this fall, and two new graduate diplomas in business administration.
