In this 3rd part of my 5-part series on Search Engine Optimization, I am going to talk about five SEO practices you should avoid if you want the search engines to find you.

It goes without saying that good SEO content is a critical piece of the traffic generating puzzle. Without traffic your website can not do its job of getting leads and sales conversions.

While there is a lot of information on the internet about SEO content and the elements you need to consider (keywords, metadata, tags, links, …), there is less advice around what not to do when it comes to creating content for your website.

So, let’s wade in. Here are five things I recommend you avoid doing when creating SEO content for your website.

  1. Not Doing Your Research

Research early! Before you begin developing content, you should conduct online searches for relevant keywords associated with your product or service. Examine the competitiveness of each and avoid using highly competitive key words everyone else is using. Using less competitive longer keywords will result in greater visibility.

  1. Poorly Written Content

The quality of your content is a reflection of your brand, so it is worth investing time to ensure it reads well. Make sure your text is well structured, easy to read, without spelling mistakes (don’t rely on autocorrect) and uses proper grammar. Subtitles should be used throughout the piece to make it easy for readers to navigate.

  1. Too Many Keywords

When creating SEO content, pick a few keywords and include them throughout your piece. While there is no ideal number of times to use a keyword on a web page, it is bad practice to go overboard and stuff your piece with these words or phrases. Yes, keywords are key to search engine visibility but too many keywords will make your piece seem repetitive and will impact its readability.

  1. Focus on A Single Keyword

Do not limit your SEO content to a single keyword. Do the research and identify the words and phrases customers are using to search for you. For instance, somebody looking to buy a bicycle may search for ‘bicycle’, ‘motorbike’ or ‘bike shop’.

  1. Lack of Unique Content

There is a lot of competition and you need to stand out from the crowd. Avoid unoriginal content by creating text that presents a fresh perspective or shares important ideas.

Take Away

There are many keyword and content planning tools available on the internet. A quick search on “keyword planning tools” will get you started. Use them to avoid these five bad practices.
